When it rains ...

June 1, 2007
Portia Stewart, Editor, Team Channel Director

We had one wild storm a few weeks ago. It was a Friday, and my dog, Sebastian, was scheduled for a regular exam. We were running late, so I was scrambling as I loaded my 2-year-old son, Donovan, in the back seat and coaxed the dog in behind him. Did I mention it was raining? The torrential kind. Sebastian hates thunderstorms, so I could see him trembling during the whole frantic drive.

We arrived at the veterinary practice 15 minutes late. It was still raining, and I'd forgotten the umbrella at home. Darn. I grabbed Donovan's baby blanket and threw it over his head. Then I grabbed Sebastian's leash and prepared for the mad dash to the front door.

Then the nicest thing happened. The receptionist, seeing my struggle, came to the door and opened it so I could make a clean sprint inside. Thank you!

Despite my lateness, a veterinary assistant immediately started Sebastian's appointment, weighing him on the big scale in the reception area. Our doctor was prompt and thorough. (He's a family favorite. I always get the feeling he loves our pets as much as we do.) He asked about Sebastian's heart problem and thoroughly examined him. We discussed Sebastian's weight (he's packed on a few pounds), the doctor recommended a dental cleaning and the appropriate parasite prevention, and Sebastian got a few extra pats and a doggy treat.

When I checked out, the receptionist reminded me to schedule Sebastian's dental cleaning and his next checkup. Then she grabbed the baby blanket I'd forgotten on a nearby bench. What a nice experience.

When I walked outside again a few minutes later, kid and dog in hand, the sun was shining. No need for an umbrella. The day somehow seemed just a little bit brighter. What a difference a little sunshine makes.
