When talking about the special training needed to handle exotic species, Don Harris, DVM, medical director at the Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center in Miami, Florida, says we need to focus on the word "handling."
He says the reality is that it's the handling that's tricky, and it's the handling where most of the special training is required. Most of the veterinary clients Dr. Harris sees who were dissatisfied with other veterinarians were dissatisfied because of the way that veterinarian handled their animal.
