Northampton, Mass. - 3/29/08 - Fleeced by a payroll scam, a Haydenville veterinary clinic had more than $90,000 stolen by its former bookkeeper.

The Family Veterinary Clinic in the Haydenville section of Williamsburg, Mass., was court ordered to receive $91,948 from Charles Graves, 58, after he pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges.

Graves wrote himself fraudulent payroll checks totalling $4,660, and a review of deposit statements on file at the clinic and bank from 2001 to 2004 showed a difference of $90,000.

An investigation began after a clinic veterinarian called police in December 2004 when Graves, the clinic's bookkeeper since 1997, didn't show up for work.
