Operating and fluorescent lights commonly interfere with the infrared light on pulse oximeters. However, covering the pulse oximeter probe with a layer of gauze (e.g. 4x4 gauze) stops this interference. And if you're using the patient's tongue, covering the probe with moist gauze also helps keep the light's heat from drying out the tongue.
