Updated flu vaccine available for horses

Fort Dodge Animal Health introduces a current strain of influenza availablein an equine vaccine. The FLUVAC® Innovator vaccine contains Kentucky'97, the most current A-2 influenza strain available in an equine vaccine.The vaccines also are proven to cross-protect against the newer Kentucky'98 and Kentucky '99 strains. "Just like the human influenza, the equineinfluenza evolves into new strains over time," says Rob Daily, directorof the company's Equine Business Unit. "The goal is to have the vaccinestrain as close to the field strain as possible." That's why it's necessaryto replace old strains with the ones actually circulating, says Dr. ThomasChambers, associate professor with the University of Kentucky's Departmentof Veterinary Science. FLUVAC Innovator vaccines are available in combinationwith rhino fractions EHV-4 and EHV-1 for additional respiratory protection.
