UlcerGard
UlcerGard prevents the onset of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), the company says. The main ingredient is omeprazole, administered at 1 mg/kg per day for 28 days during the time of stressful activities. UlcerGard is cinnamon flavored, making it more palatable for horses, the company adds.
The drug suppresses stomach acid production and has been shown to effectively prevent ulcers, the company says.
EGUS affects racing and performance horses in particular because of the nature of their lifestyles, the company adds.
More than 90 percent of racehorses and 60 percent of non-racing competitive horses have experienced ulcers in the training and show environment, according to the company.
Stress due to changes in routine, training, travel and performing contribute to the development of gastric ulcers.
