SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine) is a renal biomarker specific to kidney function. Jennifer Ogeer, DVM, MSS, MBA, MA, medical affairs marketing manager for IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., talks about how the IDEXX SDMA Test allows veterinarians to detect kidney disease earlier.

SDMA is a reflection of GFR (glomerular filtration rate), which is the gold standard assessment of renal or kidney function. While creatinine tests cannot identify kidney issues until almost 75% of kidney function is lost, SDMA can identify kidney issues at 40% loss, and in some cases as early as 25% loss. This allows veterinarians to both accurately assess kidney function and start kidney disease interventions much earlier.
