RECALL: Raw Pet Food Manufacturer Recalls 2 Products

April 23, 2018
American Veterinarian Staff

OC Raw Dog has voluntarily recalled 2 lots of its raw pet food products due to 2 types of potential contamination.

OC Raw Dog, LLC, based in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, has recalled 2 products—1 for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination and another for exceeding size restrictions set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

When the New Jersey Department of Food and Agriculture tested the company’s Chicken, Fish & Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulation, 1 lot tested positive for Listeria. This lot was sold in 4 sizes: 3-lb Meaty Rox Bags, 4-lb Slider Bags, 6.5-lb Doggie Dozen Patty Bags, and 7-lb Meaty Rox Bags.

All the affected product sizes have the following attributes:

  • Lot Number: 3652
  • Use By Date: 10/11/18

According to the company, the affected lot was sold in the following states:

  • California — 356 lb
  • Colorado — 153 lb
  • Florida — 195 lb
  • Maryland — 320 lb
  • Minnesota — 429 lb
  • Pennsylvania — 78 lb
  • Vermont — 30 lb

Listeria can cause listeriosis in dogs, the clinical signs of which may include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, muscular and respiratory signs, abortion, and even death. Humans infected with Listeria may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, aches, and fever, as well as more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, and even death.

No pet or human illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products.

Freeze Dried Sardines

According to the FDA, salt-cured, dried, or fermented uneviscerated fish larger than 5 inches were linked to botulism poisoning outbreaks between 1981 and 1987 and again in 1991. Because OC Raw Dog Freeze Dried Sardines measure 6 to 6.5 inches, the product has been recalled due to this possible health risk.

food. Common symptoms for both pets and humans include dizziness, blurred or double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation.

While the recalled product has not tested positive for C botulinum, the company is instituting this recall out of an abundance of precaution.

“We will be changing our sardine suppliers to insure the new sardines are less than 5 inches or if larger they will be eviscerated,” the company wrote in a statement. “We will continue to only use ingredients and products that are USDA certified and inspected for human consumption.”

No pet or human illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products.

Consumers who purchased any of these recalled products should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further questions, consumers can call OC Raw Dog at 844-215-DOG
