RECALL: Dog Treats Recalled Due to Elevated Levels of Thyroid Hormone

March 24, 2018
American Veterinarian Staff

The J.M. Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled several lots of 2 varieties of Milo’s Kitchen dog treats.

Specific lots of 2 different varieties of Milo’s Kitchen dog treats—steak grillers recipe and grilled burger bites with sweet potato and bacon—have been voluntarily recalled due to potentially elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone.

A recall was immediately initiated after the FDA informed the J.M. Smucker Company, which manufactures Milo’s Kitchen, of 3 illnesses that were reported after use of these treats.

The recalled products were distributed nationally and have the following attributes:

High levels of beef thyroid hormone can cause dogs to exhibit symptoms such as increased thirst, urination, and heart rate, along with weight loss and restlessness. Symptoms may cease if consumption of foods with beef thyroid hormone stops, but prolonged consumption may increase the severity of symptoms. More severe symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid or labored breathing.

Pet owners should contact their veterinarian if their dog is showing symptoms associated with high levels of beef thyroid hormone.

Consumers should call 1-888-569-6767 to receive a refund or coupon for a replacement product, or if they have further questions.

Earlier this year, dog food varieties from 3 other brands manufactured by the J.M. Smucker Company—Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘n Bits, and Skippy were voluntarily recalled after traces of pentobarbital were found in the products.
