PrideVMC’s Board of Directors announced that Kate Toyer, BVSc, MANZCVS (Surgery), is the PrideVMC 2023 Leadership Award. The award is presented to an individual who supports PrideVMC’s mission to build a better world for the LGBTQ+ community, plus has a vision of an LGBTQ+ veterinary community that is empowered and embraced by society.

“Dr Kate Toyer is the cofounder of the Australian Rainbow Vets & Allies and founder of the Veterinary Kaleidoscope podcast. Kate was nominated for the Leadership Award by Dr. Ewan Wolff, PrideVMC Industry Liaison, who praised her strong advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community in Australia, particularly the trans community,” expressed Abby McElroy, DVM, president of PrideVMC, in an organizational release.1

“Kate is a proud trans woman, a wife, a father of 3, and has achieved her MANZCVS in surgery. PrideVMC looks forward to continuing to work with Dr. Toyer and support our friends at the Australian Rainbow Vets & Allies!,” she continued.

According to the organizational release, Toyer is the co-founder of the Australian Rainbow Vets & Allies, a social and networking community for Australian LGBTQ+ veterinary professionals and allies, and Australia’s only organization giving a voice to veterinary LGBTQ+ community members.1 She also founded a podcast dedicated to investigating veterinary science named The Veterinary Kaleidoscope.

"I never really set out to be a leader. I’m not particularly exceptional or an expert at anything apart from being able to see who people can truly be. It’s them that do all of the work. I just give them the space and encouragement to explore and grow,” said Toyer.1 “So along with thanking PrideVMC, and Ewan in particular, for this honor, I would also like to thank all of the people who I have had the wonderfully good fortune and privilege to connect with and see them grow and shine. Keep on growing, keep on shining, because the world is better because of you."
