Properly managing a diabetic pet is often regarded as a complicated experience for veterinary clinics, and an overwhelming experience for pet owners. As the prevalence of diabetes in pets increases over time, it becomes more important to understand the basics of monitoring, the available options, and benefits and limitations of each option in order to provide optimal care for diabetic pets. This podcast will review the highlights of monitoring diabetes in cats and dogs and focus on current recommendations based on guidelines from veterinary organizations.

Learning objectives

Veterinarians will receive a high-level overview of the current recommendation of monitoring diabetes in pets, including the goals of therapy, and practical ways of achieving those goals. The podcast will also cover the indications for performing blood glucose curves, the benefits of home glucose monitoring, and briefly discuss newer tools available to both clinics and pet owners that help obtain relevant information without overwhelming either group.
