WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) with a 349-24 vote.

The PETS Act requires state and local emergency management agencies to consider the needs of residents with pets in the event of a major disaster.

The Humane Society and Humane Society Legislative Fund is backing the legislation in hopes it passes before hurricane season.

The bill was waiting approval by the Senate as S. 2548, at presstime.
