Is pet insurance gaining popularity?

Article

Education is key to satisfying the demand.

The number of dog and cat owners who claim to carry pet insurance has increased from 1 percent to 3.3 percent and from 0 percent to 0.4 percent respectively since 1998, according to the 2007-2008 American Pet Products Manufacturers Association National Pet Owners Survey. These small numbers might be due to the fact that only 59 percent of team members who responded to an August 2007 VetMedTeam.com survey reported their practice currently recommends pet insurance to pet owners.

While 67 percent of respondents felt that increased focus on compliance and pet owners' higher expectations will make pet insurance a necessity, 56 percent reported they haven't received enough training to understand pet insurance and educate clients. And 81 percent of team members reported pet insurance currently isn't part of their practice training or CE protocols.
