The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented a new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule change at the beginning of this year. Christopher Cripps, DVM, owner of Betterbee, explains these new FDA regulations are affecting honeybee producers and veterinarians.
The FDA has basically changed the way antibiotics are approved. Drugs and antibiotics included under the VFD will require a veterinarian to write a VFD for a honeybee producer that will allow that producer to purchase and use the product specifically as written.
