Hill's PrescriptionDiet® t/d® was introduced in 1994 as the first dog food productshown to improve the oral health of pets and opened new avenues for homecare in veterinary dentistry, the company says.

Since then scientists and veterinary nutritionists at Hill's have made improvementsto its products. New and improved Prescription Diet is designed for catsand dogs suffering from the early to severe stages of periodontal disease,the company says. Both diets help reduce gingivitis and the buildup of tartar,plaque and stains. They also have larger kibbles to increase mechanicalaction and improves efficacy, the company says. Each diet has reduced calciumto help lessen the formation of tartar on the animal's teeth. The felinediet is formulated to promote normal acid urine of 6.2 to 6.4, the companysays. The canine diet features a nutrient profile appropriate for seniordogs.

New Science Diet® Oral Care Adult pet foods are designed to clean apet's teeth and provide fresh breath, the company says. The diets featurethe Healthy Defense System with high levels of antioxidants vitamins E andC, which help maintain a healthy immune system, the company says. Thesediets also help protect pets against the risk of disease and are clinicallyproven to reduce cell damage, the company says.
