My Dog is Choking: What Should I Do?

Tina Wismer, DVM, DABVT, DABT, MS, medical director at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, explains what pet owners should do if their dog is choking.

“If you’re concerned that your dog is truly choking, you can actually do the Heimlich maneuver, just like in people. With dogs, typically, if it’s a small dog you can turn him upside down [and] if it’s a larger dog, you lift the hind end and you push right behind the ribcage, sharp and quick, just like you do with people.”
