Monensin

June 1, 2005

Elanco received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the range of use of Rumensin? (monensin sodium) in dry feed supplements for dairy cows.

Elanco received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the range of use of Rumensin® (monensin sodium) in dry feed supplements for dairy cows. Type B feeds, which is the class Rumensin is in, must be mixed with other ingredients before they are fed.

The expanded range adds flexibility as nutritional suppliers formulate premixes for dairy operations while ensuring rations comply with FDA regulations.

Producers feed Rumensin at a rate of 11 grams to 22 grams per ton on a 100 percent dry-matter basis, the company says.

Elanco recommends producers start feeding Rumensin to lactating and dry cows at 11 grams per ton, then work with nutritional advisors to determine the feeding level that is right for the individual herd.
