LaserCyte offers in-clinic hematology diagnostic options

January 1, 2003

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. introduces the LaserCyte Hematology Analyzer, a new, in-house veterinary diagnostic instrument.

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. introduces the LaserCyte Hematology Analyzer, a new, in-house veterinary diagnostic instrument. The LaserCyte system uses proprietary laser-flow cytometry to deliver the most comprehensive hematology information available for use in veterinary practices today, the company says. IDEXX is currently accepting orders for the LaserCyte. With the introduction of the LaserCyte system, IDEXX Laboratories continues its commitment to innovation in veterinary medicine. LaserCyte is the first system that provides in-house hematology results for 24 parameters, including a full five-part white blood cell (WBC) differential, comprehensive red blood cell (RBC) indices and an absolute reticulocyte measurement. The LaserCyte analyzer provides these capabilities through use of laser-flow cytometrythe same technology incorporated into state-of-the-art hematology analyzers used in reference laboratories. The LaserCyte system offers unparalleled automation with a direct-sampling system that makes running a sample almost effortless, says Harold Flynn, IDEXX Hematology business unit director. The LaserCyte analyzer is programmed to maintain itself Ҿ which means that no scheduled daily, weekly or monthly maintenance is required and the system does not require calibration. The user interface of the LaserCyte also consolidates and manages all of the IDEXX VetLab instruments the LaserCyte Hematology Analyzer, the VetTest Chemistry Analyzer, the SNAP Reader and the VetLyte Electrolyte Analyzerproviding a comprehensive diagnostic information solution unique in the veterinary practice setting. The new user interface acts as the central command station, consolidating results information from all the IDEXX VetLab instruments into one comprehensive report, making it easier to see a complete picture of the patient and discuss findings with the client. In addition, all patient and client data are stored in the user interface, so practitioners can recall historical data at any time to monitor patient progress, the company says. This new system features a touch screen monitor that is very easy to use minimizing operator training and input time. The user interface will also benefit practices using IDEXX Cornerstone and BetterChoice practice management software. Results information from all IDEXX VetLab instruments will be automatically uploaded into patient medical records and invoices to maximize patient care and office efficiency. This is exciting, sophisticated laboratory equipment, designed from the ground up for the veterinarian, says Jim Matthews, DVM, MS, Ph.D., senior veterinary clinical pathology consultant for IDEXX Laboratory Services. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only sophisticated equipment that has ever been designed specifically for the veterinary laboratory.
