Idea Exchange: Yellow wrap = yield; green wrap = go

June 1, 2012

A reader tip to make sure IV catheters are out before patient dismissal.

To make sure no patients leave the hospital with their intravenous (IV) catheters still in place, we wrap all IV catheters with yellow Vetwrap (3M) and wrap everything else with green Vetwrap. After we pull a catheter, we wrap a patient's limb with green Vetwrap, as well. That makes it easy to know if a surgery patient has had its catheter pulled and is ready to go home. Since we all know that yellow Vetwrap means an IV catheter is still in place, we rarely send any patient home with one accidently.
