Treating nontraditional species, such as opossums, can create challenges in using equipment designed for domestic species. To help pulse oximeter probes stay in place, I wrap a thin piece of wet gauze around the probe site, whether the tongue, toe, or ear. The moist gauze is thin enough to allow for a good reading, and it provides extra friction to keep the probe from slipping off the patient.
