I make it standard practice to discuss hip dysplasia with the owners of predisposed breeds when they drop off their dogs for neutering. I educate the owners about the Ortolani sign and explain that I can use this test to assess hip laxity while the dogs are anesthetized. I also ask for consent for radiography. That way, if I do find a positive sign, I can obtain a ventrodorsal radiograph to assess the hips. I have found owners are often compliant with this practice, and I identify potential triple pelvic osteotomy candidates early.
