Research has shown that when new veterinary graduates enter their first practice, they experience high levels of stress and mental distress. David Bartram, BVetMed, FRCVS, director of outcomes research for Zoetis, says there are several things that the more seasoned veterinarians in the practice can do to help alleviate some of this stress.

Experienced veterinarians should provide new veterinary graduates with support, feedback and guidance on a regular basis. Make yourself more available to the new graduates, Dr. Bartram says, and help them understand that every veterinarian will make mistakes. Also, encourage new veterinarians to take their time off and find a good work-life balance.
