Holiday Hound Cakes recalled due to mold

Article

Dog treats were made specifically for PetSmart stores.

Claudia’s Canine Cuisine’s 7.5 oz. bags of DogCandy Holiday Hound Cake and Blueberry Hound Cake have been voluntarily recalled because the cakes have the potential to become moldy. The affected bags have a “best by” date of 08-2015.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mold was found on several of the cakes delivered to stores. The cakes were manufactured specifically for PetSmart Corp. and distributed to approximately 130 PetSmart stores in 36 states. Selected stores in the following states carried the cakes: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Upon investigation, the company discovered that the cakes had a higher moisture content than expected because they’d been packaged while still warm, the FDA says in a release. “The company has taken every precaution and implemented new additional procedures to correct the issue.”

There have been no reports of illness associated with the product; however, consumers are advised to discontinue use and return the product to the nearest PetSmart store for a full refund or send it to Claudia’s Canine Cuisine, 100 Four Paws Lane, Maumelle, AR 72113. Indicate whether a refund or a replacement product is desired. All shipping fees will also be reimbursed.

Consumers with questions may contact Claudia’s Canine Cuisine from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling (501) 851-0002. Consumers may also send emails to info@claudiascaninecuisine.com.
