Hartz recalls chicken products containing antibiotic residue

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Hartz Mountain Corp. is voluntarily withdrawing its Hartz Chicken Chews and Hartz Oinkies Pig Skin Twists Wrapped with Chicken for dogs because they contain trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue.

According to the FDA, the antibiotics prompting the recall are approved for use in poultry in China and other countries, including European Union member states, but not in the United States. The FDA release goes on to say that the presence of antibiotic residue in these products is “highly unlikely to be related to the reports of illnesses FDA has received related to jerky pet treats.” Presently, Milo’s Kitchen’s Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers treats containing poultry imported from China have also been voluntarily recalled due to trace amounts of prohibited antibiotics.
