Chr. Hansen Animal Health and Nutrition introduces Probios FS, a feed additive containing food safety organisms (FSO) to reduce shedding of E. coli O157:H7. The FSOs are proprietary lactic acid bacteria strains, Enterococcus faecium CH 273 and CH301. The lactic acid produced by the FSOs lowers the pH level in the small intestines of the animal, and inhibits growth of the bacteria. The product helps beef producers reduce E. coli O157:H7 food contamination by reducing the intestinal levels and shedding of the pathogen in cattle prior to slaughter, the company says.
