Electrolytes

June 1, 2006

Bioniche Animal Health USA Inc. announced the introduction of EPIC Calf Electrolyte for young calves.

Bioniche Animal Health USA Inc. announced the introduction of EPIC Calf Electrolyte for young calves. EPIC Calf Electrolyte offers major differentiating features from current products in the U.S. electrolyte market that help restore lost fluids, supply lost electrolytes and provide energy to the sick calf.

EPIC Calf Electrolyte also provides immune egg proteins, specifically for those pathogens of most importance to the calves. Laying hens are hyperimmunized with specific vaccines to express IgY antibodies in their immune eggs. Antibodies are combined from several flocks, quantified and blended with the electrolyte ingredients.

EPIC Calf Electrolyte provides up-to-date technologies for re-hydrating the calf while providing the added benefit of supplementing milk with the product. Unlike most products that contain sodium bicarbonate as the buffering agent, EPIC Calf Electrolyte's buffering agent is sodium acetate, which permits continued feeding of milk or milk replacer to the calf.

An ideal sodium concentration of 90-130 mMol/L, acetate or glycine to enhance sodium absorption; osmolality of the solution between 350-600mOsm/L; a glycine or proprionate alkalinizing agent rather than sodium bicarbonate; and the continuation of milk or milk replacer feeding whenever possible, the company adds.

With the addition of IgY antibodies provided in a rapid dissolve formulation, it offers producers a renewed strategy for dealing with dehydrated calves.
