The incidence of leptospirosis is on the rise. This may be due to the urbanization of rural environments and increased contact with reservoir hosts. Dogs living exclusively in urban settings can become infected with leptospirosis as a result of common rodents, such as rats, which can act as reservoir hosts and can shed leptospires in their urine.
