Possibly, but try again. Molecular testing is becoming more prevalent and may have a place in the work-up of these cases. It is important to remember, however, that a positive result does not always indicate it is the cause of the disease. Animals may carry Salmonella species asymptomatically. A negative PCR result may be helpful, but a positive result should still be followed up with a culture for quantification.
