Bond Vet and Small Door Veterinary merge to form 55-clinic network

Bond Vet and Small Door Veterinary have finalized a merger that brings the 2 veterinary brands together into one of the largest premium veterinary networks in the country, the companies announced earlier this month. The combined organization will span more than 55 clinics across major markets in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest, serving over half a million pets and employing more than 1000 team members, including over 170 veterinarians.

According to the release, Bond Vet and Small Door were founded on a similar goal: delivering veterinary care that is personal, built on trust, and available when pet families need it most.¹ The 2 companies often served the same neighborhoods and combining them is intended to bring that experience to more pets, with more veterinarians, broader clinical expertise, and technology that keeps care connected across locations.

Small Door's membership-based model has centered on primary care, ranging from routine preventive services to advanced dentistry and surgery, delivered with continuity of relationships, 24/7 digital access, and American Animal Hospital Association accreditation. Bond Vet built its reputation on accessible care for everyday and urgent needs, growing into a provider offering primary, urgent, dental, and surgical services. Together, the companies said their complementary strengths give pet families a single trusted network for the full continuum of care, and give care teams greater resources and support to build sustainable careers.

Leadership under the merger

Florent Peyre, co-founder and CEO of Small Door, will lead the combined company as CEO, overseeing its strategy, growth, and mission to build the most trusted brand in veterinary care. Joe Altobelli, president and chief financial officer of Bond Vet, will transition to executive strategic advisor for the unified organization.

“This comes down to a shared vision that veterinary care can work better for the pets, the families who love them, and for the teams who show up for them every day. Bond Vet gets that,” Peyre said in the release.¹ “They've built a strong team with a genuine commitment to delivering above-and-beyond care for families with compassion and consistency, and that's rare. There's a lot we can learn from one another, and that's where the real opportunity lies.”

Altobelli said joining forces with Small Door was “the natural next step” for a company that set out to strengthen the human-animal bond.

“Bond Vet set out to strengthen the human-animal bond by making advanced veterinary care accessible, delightful, and sustainable for pet families and for the teams who deliver it,” Altobelli said.¹ “It has been an honor to lead the Bond Vet team, and I have full trust in Florent and the combined leadership to carry this work forward.”

On the clinical side, Jamie Richardson, DVM, Small Door's chief medical officer, will lead the combined organization in the same capacity, overseeing clinical operations and medical standards across the network.

“The best veterinary care is built on trust, and that trust runs through every veterinarian, technician, and clinic team we have,” Richardson said.¹ “I am committed to maintaining the medical excellence both organizations are known for, and to making sure our teams have the resources and support to do their best work, so every pet gets the care they deserve.”

In the near term, Small Door and Bond Vet will continue operating under their existing brands at all current locations, with the same care teams pet families see today. Over time, the organizations plan to move toward a unified experience, with changes communicated to clients in advance.

The companies said the combined organization will continue to set the standard for premium veterinary care across its markets, adding locations and reaching more pet families as it grows. Further details are expected as they become available. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
