Schaumburg, Ill.-The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) wants to stress it does not endorse, recommend or approve the use of wood chippers for the euthanasia of poultry as was recently reported in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Tribune journalist reported that area poultry ranchers used woodchippers to perform poultry euthanasia following the outbreak of ExoticNewcastle Disease. It has further been written that the method is approvedby the AVMA. In response to these assertions, Dr. Bruce Little, AVMA executivevice president, says, "It is absolutely absurd and ludicrous to believethat any veterinary medical association, especially an association thathas for more than 150 years been the leading voice for humane and propercare of animals, could or would advocate throwing live chickens into a woodchipper as an appropriate method of euthanasia."
