Agreement inked for acquisition of animal genomics business
The $160 million deal gives Zoetis ownership of Neogen Corporation's portfolio, which includes DNA testing solutions for the livestock and companion animal industries.
Animal health company Zoetis and Neogen Corporation, a food and animal safety solution provider, have entered into a definitive acquisition agreement. Under the $160 million deal, Zoetis will acquire Neogen’s animal genomics business.1,2
Neogen’s genomics business, GeneSeek, serves customers in more than 120 countries through its 5 laboratories in the United States, Brazil, Australia, China, and the United Kingdom, as well as an office in Canada. GeneSeek generated approximately $90 million in sales during its 2025 fiscal year, according to Neogen.1
The business leverages a comprehensive genotyping platform that combines fixed-array and sequencing technologies, as well as software solutions that empower customers to make informed, data-driven decisions. According to Zoetis, Neogen’s business is a leader in US beef and dairy genomics, and its cutting-edge technologies enable highly accurate, scalable genetic testing and deeper insights into animal health, productivity, and sustainability.2
Neogen has developed comprehensive solutions in food safety, livestock, and pet health and wellness markets. GeneSeek includes advanced DNA testing for livestock and companion animal industries that has delivered “highly accurate, data-driven insights” to beef, dairy, and other industries, contributing to improved animal performance and health, according to the company.1 GeneSeek also offers genomic tools for beef and dairy cattle and dogs under its Igenity portfolio,3,4 as well as GeneSeek Genomic Profiler–branded genotyping arrays for cattle, swine, horses, sheep, and shrimp.5 The GeneSeek business is supported by the Encompass platform for genomic data integration.1
The acquisition deal aligns directly with Zoetis’s strategy to drive future livestock innovation through genomics, according to the company. “As we continue to grow our leading innovative solutions in precision animal health, this acquisition brings complementary capabilities that expand predictive insights and individualized care, enabling us to deliver added value to customers. Together, we are shaping the future of animal health, empowering customers with the tools they need to support healthier animals and sustainable livestock production globally,” Jamie Brannan, chief commercial officer for Zoetis, said in a news release.2
For Neogen, the acquisition deal represents a planned divestiture as part of the company’s portfolio review strategy “to simplify the business and focus on core strategic markets,” according to the company. “This transaction…allows the company to accelerate deleveraging and improve profitability going forward,” Mike Nassif, president and CEO of Neogen, said in a news release.1 “Furthermore, this deal allows us to focus on areas where the company has the most significant competitive advantage and further leverage our core capabilities in food and animal safety. We are committed to a smooth transition for customers, employees, and other stakeholders and believe the business is well positioned to thrive under Zoetis’s ownership.”
The acquisition agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and the satisfaction of regulatory requirements. Both companies expect to complete the deal in the second half of 2026.1,2
