Acclaimed Infectious Disease Specialist, One Health Leader to Head US Diagnostics for Zoetis

January 9, 2018
Kerry Lengyel

Dr. Richard E. Goldstein—a leader in the One Health community and an internationally renowned specialist in infectious disease—has been appointed executive director and chief medical officer of US diagnostics for Zoetis.

Zoetis, the world’s largest producer of medicines and vaccinations for pets and livestock, has named Richard E. Goldstein, DVM, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA, as executive director and chief medical officer of the company’s US diagnostics division.

Dr. Goldstein—who achieved international recognition for his work on canine Lyme disease and leptospirosis, and serves on the scientific advisory boards of the One Health Commission and the Global Lyme Alliance—will take over the role February 5.

Dr. Goldstein received both his Bachelor of Science and DVM from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He spent the past 6 years as chief medical officer of the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Prior to that he served 12 years as a professor of small animal medicine at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

“Dr. Goldstein is a well-respected, internationally renowned veterinarian in small animal internal medicine and we’re honored to have him join our Zoetis team,” Lisa Lee, vice president of US diagnostics and business solutions at Zoetis.

In his new role, Dr. Goldstein will lead the diagnostics team in expanding products and initiating and spearheading diagnostic studies. Other duties will include:

  • Working with the US Companion Animal division to develop educational events for sales and marketing
  • Leading efforts to bring the Zoetis “Predict, Prevent, Detect, and Treat” strategy to life
  • Managing the Key Opinion Leader program
  • Emphasizing digital innovation, diagnostics, genetic tests, and biodevices

“I’ve always been incredibly impressed with Zoetis and its industry-leading approach to improving overall animal health,” Dr. Goldstein said. “I am excited and energized about taking on this new role, and I look forward to continuing the diagnostics team mission to stay on the cutting edge of technology and novel concepts to fight genetic and infectious diseases in pets.”

Dr. Goldstein has received various accolades, including the Endocrinology Society Research Award (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) and the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award. With more than 60 published research papers and textbook chapters to date, Dr. Goldstein has proven to be a respected researcher, author, lecturer, and teacher.

“His award-winning work, research, and passion for preventing genetic and infectious diseases make him an ideal fit for our company as we continue to develop innovative technologies and solutions to diagnose disease as well as treat and improve the lives of pets,” Lee said.
