One man, one vote

HELENA, MONT. — Every vote matters to Krayton Kerns, DVM.

His bid to unseat former client and incumbent Democrat Emelie Eaton to capture a seat in the Montana House of Representatives was deadlocked at 1,971 votes each.

"I just need at least one break in this whole thing. All I need is one vote," Kerns tells DVM Newsmagazine.

A recount was ordered this month, and if that doesn't settle the race, the decision will be deferred to Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer.

A lot is hinging on the results of Kerns' race — the outcome will determine which party takes control of Montana's House of Representatives.

Kerns, 49, a mixed animal practitioner and owner of Beartooth Veterinary Service in Laurel, adds: "I am going to press on like I'm the representative. If it's up to the governor, there's one thing I can count on — I will not be selected."

Regardless of the outcome, Kerns says running was something he needed to do.

"One thing I have learned, I respect everyone who throws their hat in the ring. Man, you are going to take some shots."
