Advanced Animal Nutrition recalls dry dog foods because of aflatoxin levels

Thayer, Mo. -- Advanced Animal Nutrition recalled its Dog Power Dog Food products manufactured from Jan. 4, 2011 through Nov. 18, 2011, due to high aflatoxin levels.

— Advanced Animal Nutrition recalled its Dog Power Dog Food products manufactured from Jan. 4, 2011 through Nov. 18, 2011, due to high aflatoxin levels.

This is the third recall due to high aflatoxin levels in the last week, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Affected products include Dog Power Adult Maintenance Formula 21-12 Dog Food, 50-pound bags; Dog Power Hunters Formula 27-14 Dog Food, 50-pound bags; Dog Power Hi-Pro Performance Formula26-18 Dog Food, 50-pound bags.

The recall only applies to those products listed with the following Packaging Date Codes (lot numbers): 4K10004 through 4K1322. Affected products were distributed in Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

No illnesses have been reported, but stores have already been instructed to remove the recalled products from shelves, and consumers are urged to return opened or unopened packages to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold byproduct, according to FDA. Symptoms include sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea. If pets exhibit these signs, they should be examined by a veterinarian, FDA says.
