A $563 million National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility will be built in Manhattan, Kansas. The Department of Homeland Security's decision ends a national search for the BSL-4 laboratory that will replace an aging Plum Island laboratory in New York. Plum Island served as this country's first line of defense against infectious animal-health diseases like anthrax and foot-and-mouth disease. The Manhattan site won out over four other proposed sites including Athens, Ga.; Flora, Miss.: Butner, N.C. and San Antonio. Go to Federal laboratory to relocate, infuse an estimated $3.5 into Kansas economy.
