The course is designed to help the veterinary practice team understand the factors related to urinary incontinence. Topics covered include clinical symptoms associated with urinary incontinence, anatomy of a normal canine female bladder and the normal neurologic control of micturition, storage and voiding phases of urination, abnormal causes of urination, clinical symptoms associated with upper and lower motor neuron bladders, reflex dyssynergia, ectopic ureters, vestibulovaginal stenosis and urge incontinence, urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence, assessing patients for recessed vulva, urine scalding, staining or odor during a complete physical exam, otential comorbid conditions that could be associated with urinary incontinence, role estrogen plays in urinary incontinence, therapeutic drugs used to treat urinary incontinence as well as the potential side effects associated with each, and surgical procedures available to treat urinary incontinence.
