Second Hemodialysis Academy Begins Through UC Davis

The second installment of the UC Davis Hemodialysis Academy will commence on September 15, 2016 and run through August 16, 2017. The 11-month online course is an intensive curriculum on veterinary blood purification therapies. The advanced certification program for extracorporeal therapies offers more than 150 hours of certified instruction from leading renal medicine veterinarians throughout the world. The academy consists of in-depth instruction on the principles, basic science, and clinical applications of intermittent hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, hemoperfusion, therapeutic apheresis, acute and chronic kidney failure, and operation of a hemodialysis program. For three days a week over nearly a year, course enrollees will participate online in lectures and discussions on Mondays and Wednesdays, with extracorporeal rounds and group discussions on Fridays. The web-based curriculum is a combination of live, interactive, archived, and self-paced modules, and is available to veterinarians worldwide. This years academy has 111 registered veterinarians from more than 20 countries. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), along with the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, is offering the academy in collaboration with The Ohio State University, UC Veterinary Medical Center - San Diego, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Bern (Switzerland), Tufts University, and Friendship Hospital (Washington, DC). Following completion of the academy, participants will be presented certification by UC Davis for Achievement in Hemodialysis, demonstrating aptitude and competency in the principles of extracorporeal therapies and their veterinary applications.I definitely found the quality of the course to be as good as any I have experienced, said Dr. Seth Ghantous of Chicago, who completed the first Hemodialysis Academy.
