The presence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and its effects on animal health have recently become more evident and it is clear that this pathogen is emerging as an important zoonotic and nosocomial agent in veterinary settings and therefore has become a major veterinary concern. This lecture will provide a summary of the current understanding of MRSA as a zoonotic pathogen, briefly discussing the two scenarios in regards to animals: scenario 1, spillover of MRSA human strains to animals; and scenario 2, transmission of true zoonotic MRSA (ZO-MRSA) strains.
